Tens of thousands of job vacancies need filling “urgently” or require an “immediate start” as the pingdemic is blamed for staff shortages.

More than 1.1 million posts are available as bosses struggle to recruit, according to an employment search engine.

There are almost 31,000 retail vacancies, up by 14% in the last month, 10,000 in supermarkets, 77,000 in hospitality and catering, 90,000 in trade and construction, and 84,000 in logistics and warehousing.

Some 72,000 adverts are labelled as “urgent” or with companies wanting an “immediate start” for workers.

Adzuna found 1,116,454 advertised vacancies between July 19 and 25 – marking the 11th consecutive week of vacancies topping a million.

“The struggle to hire is one of the biggest challenges facing businesses, with hundreds of thousands of workers still on furlough, hesitation among others to go back to work, fewer overseas workers available to fill positions, and a lack of skilled staff in some sectors.
