A record 689,313 people were pinged by the NHS app to self-isolate last week, new figures show.
Data shows the scale of the so-called pingdemic as nearly 700,000 people were told they had been in close contact with someone who had tested positive for Covid-19 in the week up to July 21.
This compares to 618,903 people who were pinged by the app in the week up to July 14 – itself a rise of 19% on the previous week, when 520,194 alerts were sent.
The Government has faced sustained criticism over the numbers of people being told to isolate in recent weeks, prompting staffing shortages in a number of key sectors.
But ministers have refused to bring forward plans to allow double jabbed Brits to avoid self isolating, which are due to come into force on August 16.
